COMMUNICATING

The language barrier does not have to be as big as some feel it is. There is much that teachers can do to help ELLs succeed in school. Convincing others who impact ELLs' education that this is true can sometimes be a challenge, but teachers who have knowledge of current research can do a lot to dispel myths about language learning within their schools and the community.

This section contains evidence of my training in:


  • Effective communication with ELLs, parents whose home language is not English, faculty, other professionals, and the public who may or may not be knowledgeable about ELLs.
  • Identifying appropriate techniques for leading class discussions (e.g., listening, identifying relevant information, probing, drawing inferences, summarizing student comments, and redirecting).
  • Identifying ways to correct student errors (e.g., modeling, providing an explanation or additional information, or asking additional questions).
