EXERCISE 3 – An Italian being interviewed by an English speaker

Is Andrea using acquired or learned knowledge? How can you tell?
Andrea is using an acquired knowledge of English. This is apparent in her use of phrases or common word groupings like “I don’t know,” “it’s okay,” “no never” and “I think so.” She also knows a few verbs, but instead of using the infinitive form, like a student of English might, she uses various conjugations of the verbs without regard to the subject of the sentence. This indicates that she learned these verbs simply by listening to English conversation, without learning the rules for declining them. Examples are, “he working,” Charlie Chaplin take” and “he go.”
